Ganguly: Loses captaincy by end-2005

There is a fair amount of speculation about whether Sourav Ganguly will lose the captaincy of the Indian cricket team by the end of 2005. This is a decision that will have as much to do with politics as with cricket: if the Pawar-Dungarpur camp wins the forthcoming BCCI elections, Ganguly will be in trouble. And even if Ranbir Singh Mahendra wins, he could assert his independence from Jagmohan Dalmiya by sacking Ganguly, whom he hates.

Indisposition to Ganguly that causes him to miss some games will not be considered his losing the captaincy. Only if someone else is appointed captain despite Ganguly being available will he have considered to have lost the captaincy.

Arbitration will be based on information appearing on news reports appearing in the Indian Express or The Hindu, on 31 Dec 2005. The prediction may be closed earlier if the event occurs and is brought to the notice of the moderators.

  • what if SG loses one day captaincy and retains test, how wud the decision be made in that case?

  • Ramey, good point. I would say ‘loses’ would mean *either* one day or test captaincy. So even if he loses one but retains the other, this should be considered a true outcome. Of course Bluespan has the final say :)

  • Hasn’t he already lost his captaincy?? BBC reports it – here.
ExpressIndia also reported it, but I’m not able to find the link. It is mentioned here though.

  • The consensus among the moderator group is that Ganguly has presently lost his captaincy only because of his elbow problems and is not out for good. The prediction clearly states:
